Additive Appearance Introduces PrismSlicer

After turning heads at Formnext 2024, Prague-based startup Additive Appearance, a spin-off from Charles University, officially launches PrismSlicer, a full-color slicing and DfAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) software for multi-material, inkjet-based 3D printing technologies. PrismSlicer is engineered to deliver high-fidelity color reproduction, precise volumetric control, and save material in the process, targeting application across industrial design, healthcare, dental, model making, education, and rapid prototyping.

Built to address the limitations of conventional slicers, PrismSlicer integrates a photorealistic rendering engine, material-aware slicing algorithms, and volumetric, voxel-level authoring precision, which help users to significantly reduce trial-and-error, avoid failed print iterations, and speed up production timelines.

“Many users struggle to anticipate how a print will turn out, especially with complex gradients and intricate color textures,” said Tobias Rittig, Ph.D., CTO at Additive Appearance. “We built PrismSlicer to eliminate that uncertainty. With precise previews and interactive controls, it becomes much easier to get it right on the first print.”

From Concept to Color-Accurate Reality

PrismSlicer addresses persistent challenges in multi-material printing, especially with inkjet-based material jetting technologies. While traditional slicers often rely on surface-based approximation models inherited from 2D printing that fail to leverage the full potential of a 3D printer, PrismSlicer instead utilizes a volumetric approach that natively supports 3D gradient generation, interpolation of material properties, and adaptive color mixing, enabling a precise spatial distribution of visual and functional properties. The goal is for users to enjoy their creative flexibility and reach the full potential of their hardware.

Key features include:

“The early version released in collaboration with Quantica validated our core technology,” noted Tobias. “Now, the full-featured PrismSlicer is here and it’s ready to support a much wider user base across multiple ecosystems.”

Designed for Real-World Demands

Across industries relying on multi-material and full-color 3D printing, PrismSlicer offers the speed, precision, and ease of use that today’s professionals demand. Its intuitive yet technically capable interface caters to both seasoned users and newcomers, with step-by-step guidance that removes friction from complex workflows. Even for customers of printing services that don’t have physical access to a printer, the predictive preview feature (sometimes also referred to as virtual printing) allows for experimenting with the technology in a cost-efficient manner.

“We want users to feel confident that what they see on-screen will match what they hold in their hands,” said Tobias. “That confidence is critical in high-stakes fields like dental, surgical models or client-based product design but also artists in the entertainment industry are looking for predictable visual fidelity.”

A More Sustainable Future for Additive Manufacturing

By drastically reducing test prints and thus material waste, PrismSlicer helps businesses adopt more sustainable practices while also saving time and money. Instead of five to ten failed prints to dial in on the correct color, which wastes machine, operator and postprocessing time, the designers can already verify the printability on the computer. This aligns with a growing industry push toward eco-conscious production and resource-efficient operation.

Roadmap and Collaboration

Additive Appearance is actively expanding partnerships across prosthetics in medicine and dentistry, commercial printing, industrial prototyping, toy and figurine productions, and visual effects. With a subscription licensing model, customers can enjoy the updates and improvements that the team releases in a quarterly cadence. A glimpse on the roadmap reveals support for more printer models, improved design tools, and further increased accuracy of visualizations.
